California Rewind is a nonprofit working with students to change the way high school sports are covered. We partner with high schools in the State of California and serve students in the education of sports media.
California Rewind (the 501c3) was formed in 2024.
The organization is an evolution of a concept started in 2020 (during COVID lockdowns) when our founder helped organize a speakeasy football team for high school students that had their season cancelled. The games were played with no fans, no band, no cheerleaders. We provided sports broadcasters to call the games on Internet radio and then held post-game interviews and podcasts of the game so the family members, neighbors and friends could watch the kids play.
Once the schools reopened, we continued to cover the kids (from the 7 schools) at their local high school games with a regional magazine, podcasts and social media. See: SunsetRewind.com
In 2023 we changed our focus from a football coverage project to an education-based organization. Our first chapter, Sunset Rewind, has the commitment of seven high school principals to participate in the program. The schools represented are: Los Alamitos, Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor, Fountain Valley, Marina, Edison and Huntington Beach. These seven high schools make up more than 15,000 students, of which 30% (average) of the students are involved in playing sports.

With help from our engaged community, we plan to expand the coverage to all 19 CIF high school sports (boys and girls).
California Rewind will be applying through ROP (Regional Occupational Program) in Orange County to offer CTE (Career Technical Education) units.
We will optimize SunsetRewind.com in 2025 and open more chapters in 2026.
